Q: How do you eliminate lake and pond sludge?
A: The best way to eliminate lake and pond sludge is to add a safe, all-natural bacteria treatment that digests organic sludge at the lake and pond bottom (aka our Farm Pond Treatment!).
Q: What other problems occur because of pond sludge?
A: Excess lake and pond sludge causes tremendous problems. Sludge and muck make for dirty water that is not clear. We discuss more problems that occur in your pond because of sludge on our Benefits to using Farm Pond Treatment page.
Q: Why are the fish dying in my pond?
A: Excess lake and pond sludge is directly responsible for killing fish. Fish death occurs from oxygen loss, growth of pathogenic bacteria that thrive in the sludge, and release of H2S gas (responsible for rotten egg smell).
Q: Why does my lake or pond get out of balance?
A: With so many variables affecting your pond, choosing the correct treatment options can be confusing. Ponds and lakes are very sensitive to outside influences, especially the quality of water flowing into them and the nutrients and organic material being washed or blown into them. The ideal pond has clear cool water, low nutrient levels and lots of large leaved aquatic plants for shade. However, over time the gradual build-up of organic matter and nutrients washed into the pond can lead to too much plant growth. This bloom dies and rots, depleting oxygen in the water and killing fish. This process is called eutrophication and is bad for the health of the pond. Eutrophic ponds have cloudy and dark colored water with low oxygen levels, thick stagnant sediments and lots of sludge.
Q: Why should I avoid using chemicals to eliminate pond and lake sludge?
A: Using chemicals can make your pond clear but can harm fish and plants. Algaecides upset your biology. These chemicals are a poor choice for the environment. Algaecides are the quick way to make your water clear, but not the safe way. Farm Pond Treatment is the safe alternative to clean and clear up lake and pond water. Read more about the Benefits of our pond clarifier.
Q: How do I store it?
A: Pond products can be stored at room-temperature for maximum effect. However, pond products stored in both high and low temperatures still works, the packaging may just become distorted. Learn more about storage.
Q: How long is the shelf life?
A: Pond products have a guaranteed shelf life of 1 year.

StartSmart Instant Cycling
What is StartSmart?
A: StartSmart is the ideal tool for instantly cycling a new or problem aquarium. StartSmart comes in both freshwater and saltwater versions. Be sure to obtain the correct version for your aquarium.
What is Instant Cycling?
A: Fish excrete ammonia, which is toxic in the enclosed environment of an aquarium. Cycling refers to the biological conversion of toxic ammonia, into less toxic nitrite, and finally into relatively non-toxic nitrate. A tank is considered “cycled” when the ammonia excreted by fish is rapidly as safely converted into nitrate.
What is StartSmart made of?
A: StartSmart is composed of the highest concentration available of live, nitrifying bacteria that are essential to maintaining a properly “cycled” aquarium. When added according to directions, StartSmart will instantly cycle your aquarium, which means that conversion of ammonia to nitrite to nitrate will occur immediately, at levels safe for your fish. Remember that there are both freshwater and saltwater versions of StartSmart, so be sure to get the correct version for your aquarium.
Can I Add Fish Immediately after Dosing with StartSmart?
A: Absolutely. However, remember to follow all standard start up conditions for a new aquarium, such as dechlorinating water, getting the tank up to proper temperature, adding all required equipment such as aeration, and allowing time for set up and acclimatization of plants, etc. Instead of waiting weeks to add fish, you can add your fish at normal recommended stocking densities without worrying about toxic ammonia build up.
What is the Dose Rate for StartSmart?
A: Use 4 ounces of StartSmart Instant Cycling for every 50 gallons of aquarium volume. Dose Rate »
How do you know StartSmart is working?
A: The most obvious result will be reduced or zero ammonia readings after adding fish. Because of the way the cycle works, ammonia turns into nitrite before turning into nitrate, so you may see short term nitrite peaks. However, these are less toxic than ammonia peaks. Nitrite peaks quickly vanish (after a day or two), and you should read close to zero on both ammonia and nitrite tests.
StartSmart Complete
What is StartSmart Complete?
A: StartSmart Complete is flagship product for the serious aquarium hobbyist. StartSmart Complete comes in both freshwater and saltwater versions. Be sure to obtain the correct version for your aquarium.
What Makes StartSmart Complete the Flagship Product?
A: Only StartSmart Complete combines three function in one bottle. Using the different doses on the product label, this product has a maintenance dose, and instant cycling dose, and water clarity dose. Three functions in one bottle make this our complete aquarium solution!
What is StartSmart Complete made of?
A: StartSmart Complete is composed of the highest concentration available of live, nitrifying bacteria that are essential to maintaining a properly “cycled” aquarium. StartSmart Complete also contains bacteria that digest sludge, along with bacteria that compete for N and P nutrients. With this broad spectrum of highly concentrated, active bacteria, StartSmart Complete restores aquarium clarity without use of harsh chemicals.
Can I Add Fish Immediately after Dosing with StartSmart Complete?
A: Absolutely. To instantly cycle, an aquarium, use the instant cycling dose on the label.
What are the 3 Dose Rates for StartSmart Complete?
A: Dose 1 oz of StartSmart Complete per 40 gallons weekly, or at least monthly, for maintenance; 1 oz per 10 gallons for instant cycling; 1 oz per 20 gallons until problem is solved for water clarify problems. Dose Rate »
How Long Does it Take to Solve a Water Clarity Problem?
A: For solving chronic or long-term water clarity problems, continue to dose as directed for 4 to 8 weeks. Continue manual cleaning as needed until water and tank surfaces are restored to desirable clarity.
How do you know StartSmart Complete is working?
A: The most obvious result will be reduced or zero ammonia readings after adding fish, along with exceptional water clarity. When using the maintenance dose, manual cleaning and need for water changes will be reduced by about 50% or more.
TLC Optimizer
What is TLC Optimizer?
A: TLC Optimizer is the ideal maintenance product for an aquarium hobbyist. TLC Optimizer comes in both freshwater and saltwater versions. Be sure to obtain the correct version for your aquarium.
What are the Benefits of TLC Optimizer?
A: TLC Optimizer keeps aquariums crystal clear, minimizes toxic ammonia and nitrite, and reduces sludge build up.
What is TLC Optimizer made of?
A: TLC Optimizer is composed of safe, hungry, waste-digesting bacteria and nitrifying bacteria that are essential to maintaining a properly “cycled” aquarium. Remember that there are both freshwater and saltwater versions of TLC Optimizer, so be sure to get the correct version for your aquarium.
What is the Dose Rate for TLC Optimizer?
A: Use 1 oz Optimizer for every 25 gallons of aquarium water. Dose Rate »
How do you know TLC Optimizer is working?
A: The most obvious result will be a beautiful, healthy aquarium. Manual cleaning of bottom sediment and tank walls will be reduced, and your fish will remain as healthy as possible.
DeChlor and Conditioner
Why Use DeChlor and Conditioner?
A: Tap water and well water often contain various chemicals that are unhealthy for fish in pond and aquarium environments. For example, tap water often contains high residual chlorine or chloramines. Well water may contain more metals than are healthy, or may contain too much hardness. These chemicals may be harmful to fish and desirable aquatic plants, adding DeChlor and Conditioner makes water safe instantly.l
What is DeChlor and Conditioner Made Of?
A: DeChlor and Conditioner contains ultra pure sodium thiosulfate, which is a well-known, safe chemical that neutralizes chlorine and chloramines. Polyvinylpyrrolidones are polymers that promote the slime coat that protects the gills of fish. The concentration is carefully titrated to be just enough to give the needed protection, although much higher doses are not dangerous. Organic chelating compounds are included in DeChlor and Conditioner because of their ability to detoxify heavy metals. Finally, the proprietary reducing agents contained in DeChlor and Conditioner reduce long-term nitrate build up.
What Does DeChlor and Conditioner Actually Do?
A: There are four main functions performed by TLC DeChlor and Conditioner:
1. Removes chlorine and chloramines
2. Promotes slime coat to protect fish gills
3. Detoxifies heavy metals
4. Reduces long term nitrate build up
While nitrate itself is generally not toxic, higher levels of nitrate can cause problems, plus they contribute to severe algae blooms. Therefore, regular use of DeChlor and Conditioner whenever you add water to a pond or aquarium gives protection to the aquatic environment by reducing long term nitrate build up.
What Applications Are Typical for Use of TLC DeChlor and Conditioner?
A: DeChlor and Conditioner is recommended for use in outdoor ponds and in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. It is recommended for initial filling of the pond or tank, or whenever water changes or replacements are made. DeChlor and Conditioner is also a great tool for dechlorinating swimming pools.
How Safe is DeChlor and Conditioner?
A: DeChlor and Conditioner is completely harmless to all fish, wildlife, and plants when used according to dosage instructions. DeChlor and Conditioner is NOT for human ingestion, and like any household chemical, must be stored out of the reach of children. DeChlor and Conditioner contains no phosphates, nitrates, or silicates that cause algae build up.
What is the Dose Rate for DeChlor and Conditioner?
A: The standard dose is 1 ounce of DeChlor & Conditioner per 125 gallons, or 8 ounces per every 1,000 gallons. A double dose may be required in special situations. Dose Rate Details »
